SUMMARY:Indranil Chakravarty The Power of Intercultural Dialogue: Octavio Paz Between Mexico and India
DESCRIPTION:Based on his recent book\, The Tree Within: Octavio Paz’s Years in India (Penguin\, 2025)\, Chakravarty explains how the Mexican Nobel Laureate poet and diplomat\, Octavio Paz\, became a cultural bridge between two parts of the Global South that are separated by geography\, language\, culture and history. As Mexico’s ambassador to India in the 1960s\, Paz immersed himself in the country’s contemplative traditions\, travelled widely\, forged deep friendships with some of India’s finest minds\, and produced some of his most inspired poetry and essays. By his own admission\, he experienced a ‘second birth’. While exploring the poet’s inner journey by delving into multilingual archives\, declassified diplomatic files\, personal letters and intimate interviews\, Chakravarty explains how Paz prepared\, emotionally and intellectually\, for a deep engagement with India\, allowing it to reshape him. While he gave poetic form to several Indian philosophical concepts and became a mentor to an entire generation of avant garde painters\, he opened pathways through which Latin American writers and artists could draw inspiration from Indian culture. \n\n\n\nIndranil Chakravarty is a writer\, filmmaker and academic based in India. His main interest lies in tracing the history of cultural interactions between India and Latin America. For more than two decades\, he has been a professor of film history at India’s premiere film institutes and has made several documentaries. He studied at Presidency College in Calcutta\, Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV in Havana\, and received his PhD from Victoria University of Wellington. His publications include The New Latin American Cinema\, India’s Audiovisual Market\, and a book in Spanish titled Redescubriendo a Tagore\, about the discourse around the Indian poet in Hispanic literature. His next book\, Hometowns (2027)\, is the biography of an Indian villager in the 19th century who led Brazilian battalions in two wars.

DESCRIPTION:NADINE\nIn this shorter performance\, Luiza Romão presents several scenes from the show Nadine\, using a sampler and a microphone on a stand. Adaptable to different formats and performance spaces\, the piece touches on aspects of detective fiction and presentsthe poems with a stronger emphasis on spoken word. \nSynopsis:\nBased on Luiza Romão’s book of the same name\, Nadine tells the story of a young woman who\, after being murdered\, decides to investigate her own crime. Blending spoken word with crime fiction\, the performance explores themes such as gender\, the representation of violence\, and the states of vulnerability associated with sleep. Onstage\, the poems come to life alongside the original soundtrack created by José Paes de Lira. Featuring various special guest appearances in voice-over\, the audio tracks are triggered through a sampler\, creating soundscapes\, musical recordings\, and vocal architectures. The event will be hold both in Portuguese and English. \nLUIZA ROMÃO\nPoet\, actress\, and researcher\, Luiza Romão is the author of Sangria\, Também guardamos pedras aqui (winner of the Jabuti Prize for Best Poetry Book and Book of the Year)\, and Nadine. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts and a master’s degree in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature from the University of São Paulo (USP)\, where she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. researching the relationship between literature and performance. \nHer work has been presented at major festivals in Brazil and abroad\, including performances in Argentina\, Germany\, Cuba\, China\, Spain\, Portugal\, Switzerland\, the Netherlands\, Mexico\, Costa Rica\, France\, and Uruguay\, among other countries. \n

DESCRIPTION:For GOLONDRINA’s first session\, we are delighted and honored to welcome the writer and professor José Luiz Passos. \nJosé Luiz Passos is the author of five novels\, a sci-fi novella\, short stories and a play. He teaches creative writing\, Brazilian fiction\, and Comparative Literature at UCLA. \nGOLONDRINA is a monthly creative writing workshop at UCLA that brings together visiting and campus-based writers and poets to mentor and challenge whoever joins the activity. Open to the entire UCLA community but centered on undergraduate students\, GOLONDRINA offers a welcoming space to experiment with form\, workshop drafts\, and deepen craft across genres and languages. \nEach session features a guest reader or instructor\, a brief craft talk or prompt\, and a facilitated workshop where participants share work and receive constructive feedback. The workshop is conducted in English\, but participants are welcome to write in Portuguese\, Spanish\, or any other language. GOLONDRINA aims to strengthen writing skills and foster cross-cultural exchange rooted in Afro-Latin-American & Afro-Luso-Brazilian traditions.
