SUMMARY:Interocepción insular: Lo patológico en la imaginación literaria del laboratorio Caribe
DESCRIPTION:Interocepción insular (UNC Press\, 2025) examines literary representations of disease and disability to reconceptualize the Hispanic Caribbean as a site of scientific\, economic\, and political experimentation. Exploring how individuals subjected to various forms of testing—eugenic\, medical\, neoliberal\, or otherwise—hyper-monitor a corporeality that is at once their own and alien. By theorizing the “Caribbean laboratory” as distinct from the concentration camp or the plantation\, Ugarte investigates how test subjects apprehend their own bodies within ongoing regimes of experimentation\, while discussing how disease and disability are imagined\, recounted\, and experienced inside and outside medical and colonial diagnoses. \nAna Ugarte (Ph.D.\, Duke U) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at UCLA. Both a scholar of Health Humanities\, with a focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Latin American fiction and cultural production\, as well as global Latinx studies. Ugarte’s work has appeared in journals including Cultural Dynamics\, Journal for the Study of Gender and Sexuality\, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos\, and Voces del Caribe.

DESCRIPTION:Margaret Boyle is Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and Director of Latin American\, Caribbean\, and Latinx Studies Program at Bowdoin College. Her teaching and research span the languages\, literature and cultures of early modern Spain and colonial Latin America. She is the author of Unruly Women: Performance\, Penitence and Punishment in Early Modern Spain (University of Toronto Press\, 2014) and co-editor of Health and Healing in the Early Modern Iberian World: A Gendered Perspective (with Sarah Owens\, University of Toronto Press\, 2021). Her newest book is Sabor Judío: The Jewish Mexican Cookbook (with Ilan Stavans\, University of North Carolina Press\, 2024)\, and was named a 2025 National Jewish Book Award finalist in the category of Jewish Food Writing and Cookbooks (the Jane and Stuart Weitz­man Fam­i­ly Award). \nProfessor Boyle is the director of Multilingual Mainers\, an elementary world languages and cultures program providing age-appropriate tools to combat xenophobia\, racism and intolerance through engagement with languages other than English. She has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar as well as grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Whiting Foundation for work in cultural and international exchange. She is also a scholar-partner for UCLA’s Diversifying the Classics Initiative.

Ha sido recientemente galardonado por Northwestern Law con el Global Jurist of the Year Award (2023) por sus contribuciones a la lucha contra la corrupción y en defensa de los derechos humanos en Guatemala. SUMMARY:The syntax of what’s left unsaid: A view of ellipsis from Mayan and Spanish by Rodrigo Ranero
DESCRIPTION:Ellipsis is structure and meaning without form. In spoken languages\, it is silence whose meaning must be recovered from a linguistic antecedent in the discourse. This talk proposes a new perspective on ellipsis based on a novel investigation of Spanish and Kaqchikel\, a Mayan language of Guatemala. The unresolved question regarding ellipsis that I address concerns the precise nature of the relationship that must hold between the silence and its antecedent—what has come to be known as the identity condition underpinning ellipsis. Based on my cross-linguistic approach\, I argue for a new understanding of the identity condition\, proposing that syntax is a crucial component\, but strict identity is not required (contra a long tradition). The crucial data that support my analysis involve the tense system of Spanish and the rich voices of Kaqchikel (which go beyond the familiar active and passive voices). SUMMARY:Surviving the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Speculative Fictions from Latin America’s Past\, Present\, and Futures\nOct. 14-15\, 2022\nLuskin Conference Center – Illumination Room\n  \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nTo attend in person\, no advance registration is required. \nTo attend virtually\, you must register at the following link located HERE. \nThis symposium aims to take stock of Latin America’s speculative fiction production—understood broadly as an umbrella term that includes a variety of genres\, such as science fiction\, horror\, fantasy\, and their subgenres and derivatives. “Surviving the Anthropocene” will address this early literary production in the 20th century until the cyberpunk boom of the 1990s but\, most importantly\, will put the focus on the past decade\, when both the writing and the scholarly study of Latin American speculative fictions have exploded. This cultural phenomenon has coincided with the emergence of a variety of discourses around the “Anthropocene” —a concept alluding to the current geological epoch in which the human has become a dominant force on the environment— that have attempted to make sense of the accelerated global ecological changes. \nOverarching framing questions include: What works\, tendencies\, preoccupations\, and thematic axes comprise and characterize “speculative fiction” in/from Latin America during the era of the Anthropocene? What are the contours of the local contexts—political\, economic\, social\, and cultural—that inform and inspire the works produced? She holds a PhD in Modern Languages from the University of León (Spain)\, with a specialization in Comparative Gothic literature of the Americas. She has worked at the College of the Holy Cross (Worcester\, MA)\, the University of Washington (Seattle\, WA) and the University of Stirling (Scotland\, UK). She is author of multiple articles and book chapters focused on the manifestations of fantasy and horror in the Americas\, with special attention to Gothic and Gender in Latin American literature. She is the coeditor of the volumes Latin American Gothic in Literature and Culture (Routledge\, 2018) and Aquelarre de cuentos: Antología de terror insólito escrito por mujeres (Huso 2021). \n  \n  \n\nBOOK PRESENTATION for Posthumanism and Latin(x) American Science Fiction\n\nAntonio Córdoba \nAntonio Córdoba is Associate Professor at Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Manhattan College\, where he teaches courses on Latin American and Iberian literature\, film\, and culture. His main focus of study is Latin American and Spanish science fiction. He has published ¿Extranjero en tierra extraña?: El género de la ciencia ficción en América Latina [Stranger in a Strange Land? The Science Fiction Genre in Latin America] (University of Sevilla Press\, 2011) and written articles and book chapters on Latin American science fiction novels\, Chilean author Roberto Bolaño\, Spanish horror film\, and Brazilian science fiction cinema. Along with other essay collections\, he has coedited Posthumanism and Latin(x) American Science Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2022) with Emily A. Maguire. He is currently working on a book manuscript on speculative fiction by Latin American women writers. \n  \n\nEmily Maguire \n\nEmily A. Maguire is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University\, where she specializes in literature of the Hispanic Caribbean and its diasporas. She is the author of Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography (University Press of Florida\, 2011; 2nd edition\, 2018)\, and the co-editor (with Antonio Córdoba) of Posthumanism in Latin(x) American Science Fiction (forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan). Her articles have appeared in Revista de Estudios Hispánicos\, Small Axe\, A Contracorriente\, ASAP/Journal\, and Revista Iberoamericana\, among other places. She is currently finishing a second book project on the temporality of Caribbean science fiction. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSilvia Kurlat Ares \nSilvia G. Kurlat Ares\, Ph.D.\, is an independent scholar specializing in Southern Cone Literature\, with an emphasis on issues of visual culture\, contemporary Argentine and Latin American literature\, politics and culture. Dr. Kurlat Ares has taught at George Mason University\, The Johns Hopkins University\, and the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires\, among others. Her books include Para una intelectualidad sin episteme (2006) and La Ilusión peristente. Diálogos entre la ciencia ficción y el campo cultural (2018). She has co-directed the two volume Historia de la ciencia ficción latinoamericana\, and the bilingual edition of the Peter Lang Companion to Latin American Science Fiction. She has also edited several dossiers and collective volumes for academic journals such as Revista Iberomericana and Alter/nativas. Her articles have appeared in Alambique\, Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies: Travesía\, Hispamerica\, and Science Fiction Studies\, among others. She has contributed chapters to collective volumes such as Latin American Textualities. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Mexican Studies at Arizona State University. \nHis teaching and research focus on 20th and 21st century Mexican literature and film\, with an emphasis in the cultural representation of science and technology. He has published academic articles in journals such as Chasqui\, Revista Iberoamericana\, and Revista de Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea. En narrativa publicó Relatos de sábanas (Letra negra\, 2011)\, Escenarios de un mundo paralelo (Letra negra\, 2012)\, Voyager (subversiva 2015)\, Cuando las flores aprendieron a bailar polca (Zopilotes 2020)\, Trampas para bosques (Saqarik\, 2021). En literatura infantil y juvenil publicó la novela corta Odisea de tres mundos (Santillana\, 2016) Sector 23 (Editorial Cultura\, 2019). Obtuvo mención honorífica en la rama de literatura juvenil por su cuento “Sector 23” en el primer concurso de literatura infantil y juvenil Marilena López (2017). Es fundadora de la revista de ciencia ficción Exocerebros\, actualmente tiene una columna\, “El huevo rojo” en el periódico digital Gazeta\, donde habla sobre la ciencia ficción publicada en Guatemala que ha ido encontrando. Ha sido publicada en antologías latinoamericanas y España. \n  \nLaura Ponce \n\nLaura Ponce (Buenos Aires\, 1972) es escritora\, editora y gestora cultural. Cuentos suyos han aparecido en revistas y antologías de Argentina\, Cuba\, España\, Uruguay\, Chile\, Perú y Colombia. Ha sido traducida al francés y al inglés. Formó parte del equipo de dirección editorial de Axxón\, la primera revista digital en habla hispana. Desde 2009 dirige Revista Próxima y Ediciones Ayarmanot\, dedicadas a la ciencia ficción y las narrativas de lo extraños escritas en castellano. Da talleres\, cursos y charlas sobre narrativa\, lectura y escritura del género. Coordinó Ediciones Ayamanot Presenta\, ciclo de lecturas y música. Organiza las Tertulias de Ciencia Ficción y Fantasía de Buenos Aires. Participa en la organización de Pórtico\, Encuentro de ciencia ficción\, que aúna las características de un evento académico con actividades dedicadas al fandom. Tuvo una columna mensual en el sitio de Amazing Stories y participó del programa de radio Contragolpe con una columna semanal. Publicó los libros de cuentos Vacaciones permanentes (2010)\, Nuestro mundo muerto (2016) y Ustedes brillan en lo oscuro (2022)\, y editó La desobediencia\, antología de ensayo feminista (2019); junto a Debra Castillo editó Latin American Speculative Fiction (2018). Su novela 98 segundos sin sombra (2014\, Premio Audiobook Narration) ha sido llevada al cine por el director boliviano Juan Pablo Richter. En 2004 participó del Iowa Writing Program y en 2007 recibió la beca Fulbright. En 2005 obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Cuento Franz Tamayo. Her work examines how Mexican and Central American cultural production responds to environmental crisis. She is the co-editor of two volumes in the environmental humanities: Timescales: Thinking Across Ecological Temporalities (University of Minnesota Press\, 2020) and Pushing Past the Human in Latin American Cinema (SUNY Press\, 2021). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nKEYNOTE SPEAKER\n\nAlberto Chimal \n\nAlberto Chimal (Toluca\, México\, 1970) es escritor y profesor de escritura creativa. Her work on early and Golden Age Latin American science fiction has appeared in publications such as The Cambridge History of Science Fiction\, Revista Iberoamericana\, Science Fiction Studies\, Hispania\, and the collections Parabolas of Science Fiction\, Cartografias para a ficção científica mundial\, and Latin American Science Fiction: Theory and Practice. She is a co-editor of the journal Extrapolation and the book series Studies in Global Science Fiction for Palgrave Macmillan\, and serves on the editorial boards of Science Fiction Studies\, Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts\, Alambique and the Bloomsbury series Perspectives on Fantasy; she is Contributing Editor for Latin America and Iberia for The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. She is the author of The Emergence of Latin American Science Fiction (Wesleyan University Press\, 2011)\, and her current book project is provisionally titled Latin American Science Fiction in the Space Age. \n  \n  \n  \nMiguel Ángel Fernández Delgado \n\nMiguel Angel Fernández Delgado (born in Mexico City) is a lawyer with degrees from the Escuela Libre de Derecho (Mexico)\, and the University of Pisa (Italy); a historian with studies at UNAM\, and El Colegio de Mexico; a writer\, and art curator. He is co-editor of Alambique\, Revista Académica de Ciencia Ficción y Fantasía\, at University of South Florida\, since 2013\, and co-owner of Peripheria\, a bookshop project developing in popular literary genres\, since 2017. Formerly a curator of Unviersity of South Florida’s Spanish language science fiction and fantasy special collection\, were he’s still an advisor\, and also at the Eaton Collection at University of California Riverside. His work focuses on the history of science fiction\, protoscience fiction and utopian thought\, in their literary and artistic representations. \nHe has been a lecturer in Argentina\, Brazil\, Canada\, Germany\, Mexico\, Peru\, Spain\, United Kingdom\, and United States. His work as art curator has been exhibited at Mexico and the United States. \nHe is the author of Visiones periféricas: Antología de la ciencia ficción mexicana (2001)\, Tecnología y ciencia ficción (2012)\, and Más mejicanos en el espacio (2021)\, with Samuel Manickam. Dalton \n\nDavid Dalton is associate professor of Spanish and director of Latin American Studies at the University of North Carolina\, Charlotte. His research theorizes the interface of science\, technology\, and the body and how this contributes to racial and gender hierarchies in Mexico and throughout Latin America. He is the author of Mestizo Modernity: Race\, Technology\, and the Body in Postrevolutionary Mexico (University of Florida Press\, 2018) and Robo Sacer: Necroliberalism and Cyborg Resistance in Mexican and Chicanx Dystopias (Vanderbilt University Press\, 2023). He has also edited several books and special editions in journals. López \nMarissa López is Associate Graduate Dean and Professor of English and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA\, researching Chicanx literature from the 19th century to the present with an emphasis on 19th century Mexican California. She has written two books: Chicano Nations (NYU 2011) is about nationalism and Chicanx literature from the early-1800s to post-9/11; Racial Immanence (NYU 2019) explores uses of the body and affect in Chicanx cultural production.  She recently completed a year-long residency at the Los Angeles Public Library as a Scholars & Society fellow with the American Council of Learned Societies where she worked to collaboratively develop a mobile app\, “Picturing Mexican America\,” that uses geodata to display images of Mexican California relevant to a user’s location. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nROUNDTABLE: “Overlooked Countries / Regions – Central America\, the Caribbean beyond Cuba\, Paraguay”\n\nDavid Díaz Ares \n\nDavid Díaz Arias es Ph.D. en Historia por Indiana University Bloomington (Estados Unidos). Es profesor catedrático y director del Centro de Investigaciones Históricas de América Central de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Díaz Arias también es escritor de ciencia ficción. \nMiguel González Abellás \n\nMiguel González Abellás was born in Ourense\, Spain. He graduated from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1990 and continued his studies in Latin American literature at the University of Kansas\, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1997. He has been teaching since then at Washburn University\, in Kansas\, where he teaches Spanish language and Latin American literature and culture. Besides\, he currently chairs the Department of Modern Languages at that university. He has previously published Jugando con estereotipos (Madrid: Pliegos\, 2003) and Visiones de exilio: Para leer a Zoé Valdes (Lanham\, Maryland: University Press of America\, 2008)\, as well as several articles in Alba de América\, Caribe\, Hispania and Hispanic Journal. \n  \n  \n  \nEmily Maguire \nEmily A. Maguire is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University\, where she specializes in literature of the Hispanic Caribbean and its diasporas. She is the author of Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography (University Press of Florida\, 2011; 2nd edition\, 2018)\, and the co-editor (with Antonio Córdoba) of Posthumanism in Latin(x) American Science Fiction (forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan). Her articles have appeared in Revista de Estudios Hispánicos\, Small Axe\, A Contracorriente\, ASAP/Journal\, and Revista Iberoamericana\, among other places. She is currently finishing a second book project on the temporality of Caribbean science fiction. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nKEYNOTE ADDRESS\n\nElizabeth Ginway \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nElizabeth (Libby) Ginway is Professor of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida\, where she teaches courses on Portuguese language\, Brazilian literature and culture and Latin American science fiction. She is author of Cyborgs\, Sexuality\, and the Undead: The Body in Mexican and Brazilian Speculative Fiction (Vanderbilt UP 2020) and Brazilian Science Fiction: Cultural Myths and Nationhood in the Land of the Future (Bucknell UP\, 2004\, Devir\, 2005)\, to be re-published in Brazil in 2023 by Bandeirola. She is co-editor of Latin American Science Fiction: Theory and Practice (Palgrave\, 2012) with J. Andrew Brown as well as a special number of the journal Alambique: Homenaje a Mary Shelley (2020) with Giovanna Rivero. \nShe has over 50 publications\, including articles\, chapters and reviews on Brazilian and Latin American literature published in both the U.S. and Brazil\, in journals such as Alambique\, Extrapolation\, Femspec\, Hispania\, Luso-Brazilian Review\, Modern Language Studies\, Montage AV\, Papéis\, Semina\, Revista Iberoamericana\, Science Fiction Studies\, and Zanzalá. She is the current International Division Head for the International Association of the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA) and serves on the editorial boards of the journals Science Fiction Studies\, Extrapolation\, Alambique\, and the Peter Lang Series on World Science Fiction.
