DESCRIPTION:Please join us on the evening of Monday\, April 5th for Your Future Starts Here\, a virtual event honoring our Latinx admits for the Fall class of 2021. As many of you know\, UCLA Enrollment Management developed these strategic welcome events that feature faculty\, staff\, and our academic departments/centers. Research supports that early engagement with faculty helps increase the yield of these extraordinary scholars. Your presence and participation in the past have been incredibly impactful\, and we thank you for your continued support. Connecting with faculty and staff can make a difference in committing our most talented Latinx students. \nThis enrollment event positively impacts our yield\, with over 83% of those in attendance becoming Bruins for the Fall class of 2019. These students continue to express a strong desire to meet with our Latinx faculty to make their final college choice decisions. Our success speaks for itself through these student responses. \n\n\n\n“I thoroughly enjoyed how interactive the staff and faculty were. Even if a student would not approach a faculty member\, they would come up to the students and engage them in conversation which I found lovely.”\n“I wasn’t sure initially because I didn’t know if I would fit in well to the school\, but the event helped me realize that I will be entering a community that is there to support me through my college career unconditionally.”\n“The event was inspirational and not only encouraged me to commit to UCLA\, it encouraged me to pursue a higher education.”\n\n\n\nThis year\, although our program will be virtual\, we aim to have at least 25-35 faculty and staff members present to welcome and engage with our students by participating in small group meetings\, serving as panelists\, and answering questions from students\, parents\, and guardians. \nRSVP to Juan Espinoza at jespinoza@humnet.ucla.edu and a confirmation email with more information on what to expect for this virtual event will be sent to you closer to the event’s date. SUMMARY:De la Sierra a la ficción: líderes revolucionarios en la literatura cubana contemporánea
DESCRIPTION:Una de las operaciones más concretas que demuestra las inevitables transformaciones en la producción literaria más recientes en Cuba tiene que ver con la conversión de Fidel Castro en personaje literario\, desprovisto de cualquier carga heroica y del tono reverencial con el que se le trató siempre en la isla. Si durante décadas su transformación en personaje de ficción estuvo marcada casi siempre por la línea divisoria de “a favor” (dentro de la isla) o “en contra” (fuera de ella)\, a últimas fechas han aparecido obras escritas por autores que siguen viviendo y trabajando en Cuba en las que el ex mandatario cubano aparece como personaje literario\, representado en términos críticos\, o al menos\, vulgarizadores y lúdicos. De dos de estas obras estaremos hablando en esta charla: Archivo\, de Jorge Enrique Lage y Días de entrenamiento\, de Ahmel Echevarría\, ambas del 2015. \nBio : \nDr. Damaris Puñales–Alpízar is an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Case Western Reserve. She studied Journalism at the University of Havana\, and has worked as a journalist in Cuba\, Belize\, and Mexico. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Iowa\, and since then she has worked at Case Western Reserve University\, where she teaches courses on the Caribbean and Latin American literature and culture. Her publications include the books La maldita circunstancia. Ensayos sobre literatura cubana (2020)\, and Escrito en cirílico. El ideal soviético en la cultura cubana posnoventa (2012). She has edited the volumes Asedios al caimán letrado: literatura y poder en la Revolución cubana (2018\, with Emilio J. Gallardo Saborido\, and Jesús Gómez de Tejada); and El Atlántico como frontera. DESCRIPTION:CERS book talk by Maite Zubiaurre (UCLA\, Spanish & Portuguese\, Germanic Languages). \nDiscussants: Charlene Villaseñor Black (UCLA\, Art History and Chicana Studies) and Allison Carruth (UCLA\, English and the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability). \nThursday\, May 28\, 2020\n** Zoom\, 2 – 3:30pm (Pacific Time)**\nRegistration required for attendance.  \nNote: This live event will be recorded and posted on the UCLA Center for European and Russian Studies (CERS) website and Facebook page. By attending this webinar via the Zoom platform\, you are consenting to being recorded. \nMuch has been written about landfills and the monumentality of rubbish\, but little attention has been paid to “litter\,” the small trash that soils the urban pavement\, like the bits of chewing gum that some artists decorate. Talking Trash looks at refuse in its early stages\, when it is still tiny and unassuming\, still lives in the city\, and has yet to grow\, leave the metropolis\, and accumulate in landfills.\nThe chapters of Talking Trash reflect upon the anthropomorphic nature of urban refuse; upon the poetics and semantics of micro-litterscapes and the archives of all things discarded; upon “Dumpsterology\,” or the history of the garbage container as a gendered artifact dense with cultural meaning; and upon “dirty innocence\,” or the complex and contradictory link that ties childhood to muck.\nThe author also focuses on one significant non-urban scene\, the desert landscape and the clothing and other items that immigrants discard as they make a desperate trek across the border. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR:\nMaite Zubiaurre is Associate Dean for Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion\, Humanities Division\, and Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Department of Germanic Languages at UCLA. Her areas of expertise are Twentieth-century Peninsular literature; European (particularly German) and Latin American Realism; comparative literature; gender studies; urban studies; cultural studies; Latin American women’s fiction; and Latina and Chicana fiction. \nDISCUSSANTS:\nCharlene Villaseñor Black\, whose research focuses on the art of the Ibero-American world\, is Professor of Art History and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA. While much of her research investigates the politics of religious art and global exchange\, she is also actively engaged in the Chicana/o art scene. \nAllison Carruth is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA.
