DESCRIPTION:Yuliana Ortiz Ruano is an Afro-Ecuadorian writer\, poet\, and teacher\, as well as a DJ of Afro-Caribbean music. She has published several books of poetry and prose\, including the multi award-winning Fiebre de carnaval (Carnaval Fever)\, which was chosen as one of the 50 best books of 2022 by El País. She is also the author of the poetry books Sovoz\, Canciones del fin del mundo\, y Cuaderno del imposible retorno a Pangea\, and the book of short stories Litorales. She was selected by the International Writers in Residence program in Granada\, Spain in 2023\, and was chosen for the Translator Choice II award at the LATINALE Latin America Literature Festival in Berlin. Her first novel\, Carnaval Fever\, won the Joaquín Gallegos Lara Award (Ecuador)\, the Primo Romanzo Latinoamericano Award (Italy)\, and the PEN Translation Award (UK).

El libro Ecos migrantes ha sido recientemente galardonado con la Medalla de Oro “Victor Villaseñor” del International Latino Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Interocepción insular: Lo patológico en la imaginación literaria del laboratorio Caribe
DESCRIPTION:Interocepción insular (UNC Press\, 2025) examines literary representations of disease and disability to reconceptualize the Hispanic Caribbean as a site of scientific\, economic\, and political experimentation. Exploring how individuals subjected to various forms of testing—eugenic\, medical\, neoliberal\, or otherwise—hyper-monitor a corporeality that is at once their own and alien. By theorizing the “Caribbean laboratory” as distinct from the concentration camp or the plantation\, Ugarte investigates how test subjects apprehend their own bodies within ongoing regimes of experimentation\, while discussing how disease and disability are imagined\, recounted\, and experienced inside and outside medical and colonial diagnoses. \nAna Ugarte (Ph.D.\, Duke U) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at UCLA. Both a scholar of Health Humanities\, with a focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Latin American fiction and cultural production\, as well as global Latinx studies. Ugarte’s work has appeared in journals including Cultural Dynamics\, Journal for the Study of Gender and Sexuality\, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos\, and Voces del Caribe.

Working at the intersection of cultural history and literature\, Professor Meira Monteiro complements his academic production by writing shorter texts for cultural magazines\, blogs\, and newspapers. DESCRIPTION:Margaret Boyle is Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and Director of Latin American\, Caribbean\, and Latinx Studies Program at Bowdoin College. Her teaching and research span the languages\, literature and cultures of early modern Spain and colonial Latin America. She is the author of Unruly Women: Performance\, Penitence and Punishment in Early Modern Spain (University of Toronto Press\, 2014) and co-editor of Health and Healing in the Early Modern Iberian World: A Gendered Perspective (with Sarah Owens\, University of Toronto Press\, 2021). Her newest book is Sabor Judío: The Jewish Mexican Cookbook (with Ilan Stavans\, University of North Carolina Press\, 2024)\, and was named a 2025 National Jewish Book Award finalist in the category of Jewish Food Writing and Cookbooks (the Jane and Stuart Weitz­man Fam­i­ly Award). \nProfessor Boyle is the director of Multilingual Mainers\, an elementary world languages and cultures program providing age-appropriate tools to combat xenophobia\, racism and intolerance through engagement with languages other than English. She has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar as well as grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Whiting Foundation for work in cultural and international exchange. She is also a scholar-partner for UCLA’s Diversifying the Classics Initiative.

SUMMARY:Latina Women in the Professional Environment: The Other Side of Journalism
DESCRIPTION:Erika Carlos graduated from UCSB in 2019\, and after serving at Santa Barbara Independent\, Erika worked as a multimedia producer for San Francisco Chronicle for several years. Now\, as the Editor in Chief of El Tecolote she is in charge of informing and giving visibility to the Latinx community in the Bay Area. In her own words: “I became a journalist to give a voice to people and communities that are often overlooked or marginalized. This role is an opportunity to do work that is dear to my heart and to build on El Tecolote‘s incredible legacy of community journalism.” \nEl Tecolote: Founded in August 1970\, El Tecolote Newspaper is published by the San Francisco-based arts and media nonprofit Acción Latina\, whose mission is to promote cultural arts\, community media\, and civic engagement as a way of building healthy and empowered Latina/o/x communities. \nEl Tecolote has received recent support from national funders such as Borealis Philanthropies\, the Lenfest Institute\, American Press Institute\, and Solutions Journalism Network. Partnerships with organizations such as Report for America and Catchlight Local have also made it possible to hire a full time staff photographer. El Tecolote will also serve as a host ne wsroom for the 2025-2026 journalism cohort for the California Local News Fellowship led by the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

Las palabras no solo nombran el mundo\, sino que también lo construyen visualmente. El libro Las 2000 nuevas palabras del español (según los académicos de la lengua) (Madrid\, 2025) no solo documenta esta transformación\, sino que invita a reflexionar sobre el poder de las palabras para encuadrar\, iluminar y redefinir nuestra fotografía / percepción del mundo. Te invitamos a descubrirlas y a sumergirte en este diálogo entre lengua e imagen. \nGelsys García Lorenzo es doctora en Filología Hispánica por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2016). Tiene un máster en ELE por la UCM (2015) y otro máster por la Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (2017). Se desempeña desde 2022 como Lecturer en la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (UCLA). Ha publicado múltiples volúmenes de linguística y de poesía y la antología teatral Anuncia Freud a María. Cartografía bíblica del teatro cubano (1835-2015).

Edgar Sajcabún conversará sobre su experiencia de filmar un largometraje centrado en la lucha y la resistencia de los pueblos mayas frente a los legados coloniales y el neocolonialismo. También reflexionará sobre las diferencias entre filmar cortometrajes y largometrajes\, sobre las implicaciones de los temas abordados por este filme en el contexto actual de Guatemala\, y sobre el papel de los cineastas mayas en el marco de la producción cinematográfica del istmo centroamericano. Las directoras compartirán sus experiencias haciendo cine en contextos comunitarios\, así como los retos que enfrentan las mujeres indígenas dedicadas a la producción cinematográfica en Guatemala. Además\, las directoras reflexionarán sobre la relación entre el cine documental y los procesos de resistencia política\, económica y cultural en las comunidades indígenas de Guatemala. \nCecilia Us es una cineasta de origen maya K’iche’ formada en la Escuela de Cine Casa Comal en Guatemala\, y en talleres de cine documental en Bolivia\, Costa Rica y México. Ha formado parte de la Red de Cine Maya (RECMA) y del Colectivo Lemow\, y sus proyectos se centran en posicionar temáticas e historias desde la cosmovisión maya y con enfoque de género. Se ha desempeñado como sonidista\, productora\, directora y/o guionista en cortos de ficción como Katwaj (2016)\, y en cortos documentales como Wuarmipura (2023) y Olvidados (2018). \nVerónica Sacalxot es una cineasta maya K’iche’-Mam\, originaria de Quetzaltenango\, Guatemala. Se ha desempeñado como productora y/o directora de cine en proyectos tales como Camino (2013)\, Los ojos de la abuela (2014) y el cortometraje documental La promesa mam (2022)\, entre otros trabajos. DESCRIPTION:The 1613 Confessionario en lengua castellana y timuquana con unos consejos para animar al penitente is one of the earliest books ever published in a Native language of the United States. It is composed of a Spanish language confessional with a parallel set of questions and answers in Timucua\, the Native language of much of North Florida. However\, it has been noted since at least the 1970s that the confessional contains a very significant section on Native religious practices in a section entitled “Superstitions.” Prior historical and anthropological research has cited the 1613 Confessionario extensively\, but based solely on translations of the Spanish side of the text. Based on new developments in the study of the Timucua language\, it is now possible to construct a new translation of the Native side of this book.

Los directores compartirán sus experiencias y logros como cineastas mayas trabajando en diferentes contextos de Guatemala. También compartirán reflexiones acerca de los retos de rodar con niños\, jóvenes y actores no profesionales en comunidades indígenas del altiplano\, así como en comunidades garífunas (afro-indígenas) de la costa caribe.Berta Chirix es una cineasta maya Kaqchikel\, formada en la Escuela de Cinematografía “Casa Comal” (Ciudad de Guatemala). Es productora\, directora y guionista\, con múltiples trabajos centrados en el fortalecimiento de la identidad y la cultura maya. Ha estado vinculada a la Red de Comunicadores Audiovisuales Tz’ikin y al Movimiento de Artistas Mayas Ruk’u’x. Su cortometraje Riwachik (2011) obtuvo una mención honorífica en el Festical de Cine Ícaro de Guatemala. \nElvis Caj es un director y guionista maya Poqomchi’. Estudió cine en Guatemala y México\, y ha formado parte del programa Open Doors del Festival de Cine de Locarno (Suiza)\, así como del programa de Talentos del Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara (México). También dirige un programa de capacitación cinematográfica para jóvenes indígenas en Centroamérica. SUMMARY:"Approaching dialectal variation in the context of Chuj\, a Mayan language"
DESCRIPTION:Over thirty Mayan languages are spoken in Mesoamerica and many of these exhibit considerable internal diversity. In fact\, dialectal differences can be so pronounced that mutual intelligibility is affected among speakers of the same language. This talk describes and reflects on the benefits of using a community-based approach for understanding dialectal variation\, with a focus on Chuj. While Chuj is generally recognized as having two main dialects\, the extent of their differences is far from completely understood\, and the prestige dialect has received a disproportionate amount of attention. We focus on one useful method that addresses these issues: documenting versions of the same narrative in different dialects. We show how our method can actively engage Chuj community members from all dialectal communities in order to (a) enrich the understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity in the Mayan context\, (b) expand resources available for dialects that have received less attention\, and (c) shed light on which grammatical patterns exhibit substantial variation. Furthermore\, we argue that this approach is desirable in the long-term\, since it incorporates capacity building within the community.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Dream: Undocumented Experiences and the Longing for the “Good Life”
DESCRIPTION:Talk also available via Zoom: https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/t47CbdAGQSuAmAKxJUYQpQ \nThe American Dream or the promise of “the good life” has long been portrayed as the driving force behind Latin American migration to the United States—a promise of upward mobility\, economic stability\, and a better future. However\, the hopes for individual and social upward mobility\, along with the prospects of a better future for immigrants pursuing their dreams\, have been overshadowed by criminalizing immigration policies transforming the dream into what Lauren Berlant describes as “cruel optimism”—a hope that remains unattainable and ultimately harms those who pursue it. This presentation examines the affective work immigrants do to sustain livable lives beyond and within the fantasies of the American Dream by engaging with two distinct yet complementary works: AMAME (Archive of Audiovisual Migrant Memory)\, a transnational video-letter archive curated by the Ecuadorian artistic collective Ñukanchik People\, and non-fiction piece The Undocumented Americans (2020) by Ecuadorian American writer Karla Cornejo Villavicencio. AMAME consists of homemade video recordings created by Ecuadorian migrants and their families between the 1970s and early 2000s as forms of intimate correspondence across borders. In contrast\, The Undocumented Americans\, an award-winning literary work disrupts dominant discourses that typically depict undocumented immigrants either as deserving citizens or as criminals to focus instead on the ambivalent nature of longing for “a good life”. This presentation will explore how both works shed light on how undocumented migrants navigate the expectations of migration as a path to the “good life” through the personal\, the ordinary\, and the everyday. \nMaría José Gutiérrez is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Latin American and Latinx Literature and Culture at Oxford College of Emory University. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of California\, Davis\, in 2024\, where she began collaborating with Humanizing Deportation\, a public humanities project and digital archive of self-authored stories by Latin American migrants. Since 2018\, she has contributed to the project by facilitating the production of several digital narratives—testimonial audiovisual shorts—created with deported migrants in Mexico City and Ecuador. Her research explores the emotional dimensions of migration from Ecuador and South America to the United States from a humanistic perspective\, centering migrants’ voices through community-based literary and artistic practices. DESCRIPTION:Born in Colombia and raised in Mexico City\, Rodrigo García is a celebrated award-winning director\, producer and writer. A consistent figure in independent film over the last 20 years\, Rodrigo has directed the multiple Academy Award®-nominated film\, Albert Nobbs\, starring Glenn Close\, Mother and Child\, starring Annette Bening\, Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson\, Apple TV+’s Raymond & Ray\, starring Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor\, Nine Lives\, and most recently Netflix’s Familia\, starring Daniel Giménez Cacho and Maribel Verdú. He has also worked on numerous television shows. He will converse with Maarten van Delden\, Chair of UCLA’s Department of Spanish & Portuguese\, about his work in the film and television industry\, his relationship with his father\, Gabriel García Márquez\, the recent Netflix series based on One Hundred Years of Solitude\, and other topics.
