SUMMARY:Screening Dispossession in Abya Yala: Collaborative Filmmaking and Environmental Justice in Mining Contexts
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I examine how Indigenous peoples in Abya Yala (Latin America) mobilize collaborative filmmaking to resist mining dispossession\, even as the technologies of film and video remain entangled in extractive systems. I argue that Indigenous cosmopolitics plays a central role in contemporary audiovisual narratives that contest hegemonic representations of mining\, contributing to the decolonization of extractivist perspectives and to the defense of Indigenous territorial\, visual\, and cultural sovereignty in Abya Yala. \nDrawing on selected films from Peru and Brazil and the work of Indigenous thinkers such as Ailton Krenak and Davi Kopenawa\, I introduce the concept of “orphanization” to reframe dispossession beyond purely material or human-centered frameworks. This concept highlights how extractivism fractures relational worlds\, disrupting connections between people\, land\, and more-than-human life. By bringing Indigenous thought into conversation with critical theory\, this talk highlights how cultural production can reshape the way we understand environmental justice\, dispossession\, and resistance. \nBARBARA GALINDO is a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California\, Riverside. \nShe was previously an ACLS Emerging Voices Postdoctoral Fellow in Race\, Ethnicity\, and Indigeneity (2022–2024) at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California\, Los Angeles. \nAn activist\, researcher\, and educator\, Galindo’s work advances new critical approaches to understanding socio-environmental issues in Latin America. Her research focuses on twentieth-and twenty-first-century cultural production\, with particular attention to the Andean and Amazonian regions. Her recent publications appear in the Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies (JLACS)\, LACIS Review\, and the Bulletin of Latin American Research (BLAR). \nIn this talk\, Galindo invites students to consider cultural production as a site of epistemic and political resistance within socio-environmental struggles\, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary training and multilingualism.

SUMMARY:First Epistle to the Amphibians: Reading and Conversation with Ricardo Domeneck\, Chris Daniels\, and Patrícia Lino
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch for FIRST EPISTLE TO THE AMPHIBIANS\, a collection of poetry by Brazilian author Ricardo Domeneck\, translated by Chris Daniels\, published by World Poetry Books in April 2026. The event will consist of a reading and conversation with Ricardo Domeneck\, Chris Daniels\, and Patrícia Lino. \nRicardo Domeneck is a Brazilian writer based in Berlin. He has published ten collections of poems and two of short prose in Brazil and Portugal. He is the recipient of two of Brazil’s most prestigious literary awards\, the Prêmio Jabuti and the Prêmio Alphonsus de Guimaraens\, and selected volumes of his poems have appeared in German\, Dutch and Spanish. Working with sound and performance\, he has presented work in several museums and galleries. First Epistle to the Amphibians (World Poetry\, 2026) is the first book of his poetry to appear in English translation. \nChris Daniels is a feral translator of global Lusophone poetry. He has published book-length translations of poetry by Fernando Pessoa\, Josely Vianna Baptista\, Adelaide Ivánova\, Lubi Prates\, and Orides Fontela. His selected volume of Ricardo Domeneck’s poems\, First Epistle to the Amphibians\, will be released by World Poetry Books in April 2026. \nPatrícia Lino is a poet\, an essayist\, a performer\, a translator and Associate Professor of poetry and visual arts at UCLA. Among her books\, videopoems\, translations\, performances\, talk-performances and sound experiences are\, for instance\, Todo poema é um kindergarten (2025)\, I Am a Poet\, I Was a Starling (2025)\, Imperativa Ensaística Diabólica. Infraleituras da Poesia Expandida Brasileira (2024)\, O Kit de Sobrevivência do Descobridor Português no Mundo Anticolonial (2024)\, or A Ilha das Afeições (2023).

SUMMARY:Healing Cartographies: Weaving Memory\, Movement\, and Embodied Testimonios Across Imaginary Lines
DESCRIPTION:Carla Macal is an interdisciplinary anti-colonial feminist scholar dedicated to community-engaged research that addresses the intersections of state violence and intergenerational healing. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Critical Theory and Social Justice at Occidental College and is currently working on her book-in-progress\, Healing Cartographies: GuateMaya Feminists Weaving Transformative Memory across the Hemisphere. In this talk\, Dr. Macal presents the case studies of two GuateMaya feminist groups that are challenging state-dominant narratives of the Guatemalan 36-year war (1960-1996) and foregrounding counter-memory through art\, Maya cosmovision\, and gendered embodied memory production. The groups also denounce contemporary feminicide cases through the cosmo-political praxis of cuerpo-territorio\, declaring the body our first territory and advocating for a communal subject agency. Dr. Macal examines how GuateMaya feminist groups challenge the state’s hegemonic memory by actively engaging in embodied transformative memory experiences\, or what she describes as healing cartographies\, that contribute to hemispheric decolonial solidarity.

DESCRIPTION:Lina Meruane (hija de un cardiólogo jubilado) aborda la aparición del “corazón abierto” en la novelística latinoamericana. Inspirada por El intruso (2006)\, relato de Jean Luc Nancy sobre su trasplante de corazón\, Meruane examina trastornos reales (incluido su reciente episodio de arritmia) y comenta problemáticas éticas y estéticas en tres novelas quirúrgicas: Sutura (2025)\, de Sofía Balbuena\, La novela del corazón (2022) de Roberto Castillo y Todo está bien\, salvo mi corazón\, (2022) de Héctor Abad Faciolince. \nLina Meruane es una escritora chilena y doctora en literatura (New York University\, 2009). Su obra incluye dos colecciones de relatos y cinco novelas traducidas a doce lenguas\, así como diez libros de ensayo sobre el cuerpo y la enfermedad\, los feminismos y la cuestión palestina. Su obra ha sido reconocida con los premios José Donoso (Chile)\, Metrópolis Azul (Canadá)\, Cálamo (España)\, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (México)\, Anna Seghers (Alemania)\, y las becas Guggenheim\, National Endowment for the Arts y DAAD. Actualmente dirige el programa de escritura creativa en la Universidad de Nueva York\, donde también es escritora distinguida.

SUMMARY:El gesto y la razón: La teoría de los medios de Simón Rodríguez
DESCRIPTION:El pensador sudamericano Simón Rodríguez (1769-1854)\, recordado como maestro de Simón Bolívar\, desarrolló en su obra un proyecto pedagógico y político para fundar las nuevas repúblicas sudamericanas. Para presentarla\, utilizó singulares composiciones tipográficas que configuran un modo alternativo de escritura. Esta charla explora la imbricación entre educación\, republicanismo y experimentación escritural\, y sus implicaciones teóricas. Se muestra que la obra de Rodríguez contiene una reflexión sobre cómo los objetos\, los cuerpos\, las exteriorizaciones técnicas y sus propiedades mediales le dan forma al sujeto y la comunidad política\, revelando así la manera en que una compleja teoría de los medios sustenta su proyecto republicano. \nJuan Pablo Lupi es Associate Professor en el Departamento de Español y Portugués de la Universidad de California Santa Barbara. Es autor de Reading Anew: José Lezama Lima’s Rhetorical Investigations\, y coeditor de los volúmenes Asedios a lo increado: Nuevas perspectivas sobre Lezama Lima (junto a Marta Hernández Salván y Jorge Marturano)\, y La futuridad del naufragio: Orígenes\, estelas y derivas (junto a César A. Salgado).

She serves as an ex officio member of all committees and commissions of the association\, chairs the committee that oversees the planning of the association’s annual convention\, works with the MLA’s trustees in evaluating and implementing investments of the MLA’s endowment funds\, and chairs the staff Finance Committee. \nDr. Krebs earned a PhD in English from Indiana University\, where she specialized in Victorian literature and culture\, and a BA from La Salle College (now La Salle University).

DESCRIPTION:Note: This event is RSVP only \nPlease join us in honoring the 2026 UCLA Spanish & Portuguese Distinguished Alumni Lecture Award recipient Dr. Claudia Mesa Higuera\, Professor of Spanish at Moravian University. \nThe 2026 Distinguished Alumni Lecture topic is “Castillo Solórzano\, Rubens\, and a Theater on Brushstrokes.” Soon after the famous battle of Nördlingen (1634)\, the Spanish novelist Alonso de Castillo Solórzano published a panegyric play to commemorate the triumph of the imperial army led by the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain and the King of Hungary over the Swedish and German armies commanded respectively by Gustav Horn and the duke of Saxe-Weimar. Around the same time\, the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens completed a series of paintings and engravings on the topic of love and war that allows a comparison of the two artists. This lecture examines the characterization of historical and fictional characters involved in this decisive battle of the Thirty Years’ War to suggest that such characterization is informed by a figurative tradition that reveals a shared ethos between the Spanish playwright and the Flemish painter at a time in which artistic expression seeks to extol state ideology while simultaneously subverting it. \nThe UCLA Spanish & Portuguese Department will host the Distinguished Alumni lecture on Thursday\, February 5\, 2026 at 4:00 PM at the UCLA University Club. DESCRIPTION:Ojalá Supieras [I wish you knew] is an immersive documentary that recovers the marginalized history of Islam in colonial Mexico. Using unpublished manuscripts\, inquisitorial trials\, and carefully reconstructed visual representations\, the film reveals the silenced voices of people accused of crypto-Islam and persecuted for their faith. This work challenges the traditional historical narrative and shows how diverse communities—Muslim\, Jewish\,\nChristian\, and Indigenous—formed part of the cultural foundation of Viceregal Mexico. Ojalá Supieras invites the public to rethink historical\nmemory and to recognize the traces that still remain in our contemporary identity. Join us in celebrating Mariam Saada’s documentary and the end of the term! \nDr. Mariam Saada was born in Paris and is a polyglot fluent in French\, Arabic\, English\, Spanish\, and Portuguese. She earned her doctorate in Historical Linguistics in Spanish from the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2016\, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Mexico\, where she researched Arab and Islamic documentary traces in colonial Mexico (1570–1820)\, consulting seventeen archives. She is the author of the book ¡Allah! ¡Hashem! ¡Dios! El español no es tan español (2019)\, among other publications\, and the screenwriter and director of the documentary Ojalá Supieras (2025).

Its Steering Committee includes Iker Arranz Otaegui (UCLA) with a background in contemporary Cultural Studies applied to the Basque case; Viola G. Miglio (UCSB)\, Barandiarán Chair in Basque Studies\, noted for research on minoritized languages and historical Basque–Icelandic ties; and Nicholas Smith (UCLA)\, whose dissertation The Basque Exception analyzes post-crisis identity in literature and media. \nAmong its members are Joseba Gabilondo (Michigan State Univ.\, emer.)\, an authority on Basque and post-national literatures; Blake Allmendinger (UCLA)\, who teaches Basque-American literature; Sarah T. Roberts (UCLA)\, expert on digital labor and media; David Vila (CSU Monterey)\, scholar of Iberian subcultures; Itxaso Rodríguez-Ordóñez (CSU Long Beach)\, sociolinguist of language contact; Steven Gamboa (CSU Bakersfield)\, philosopher; Joanna Brooks Leonis (SDSU)\, cultural historian; Stephen Pandol (UCLA / Cedars-Sinai)\, scientist; Mikel Etxeberria (UCLA)\, technologist; and Kevin Moore (Stanford)\, researcher in science communication. \nThis Research Group aims to provide a divergent series of research lines within the discipline of Basque Studies. Incorporating inter and trans-disciplinary perspectives\, members and participants in projects affiliated to the research group constitute just another step forward within the wider frame of Minor/Small or Indigenous cultures and languages.

DESCRIPTION:Yuliana Ortiz Ruano is an Afro-Ecuadorian writer\, poet\, and teacher\, as well as a DJ of Afro-Caribbean music. She has published several books of poetry and prose\, including the multi award-winning Fiebre de carnaval (Carnaval Fever)\, which was chosen as one of the 50 best books of 2022 by El País. She is also the author of the poetry books Sovoz\, Canciones del fin del mundo\, y Cuaderno del imposible retorno a Pangea\, and the book of short stories Litorales. She was selected by the International Writers in Residence program in Granada\, Spain in 2023\, and was chosen for the Translator Choice II award at the LATINALE Latin America Literature Festival in Berlin. Her first novel\, Carnaval Fever\, won the Joaquín Gallegos Lara Award (Ecuador)\, the Primo Romanzo Latinoamericano Award (Italy)\, and the PEN Translation Award (UK).

En su charla\, Soudi Jiménez conversará sobre algunos de los temas abordados en su reciente libro\, Ecos migrantes (2025)\, una colección de 27 textos donde se narran las historias de un buen número de mujeres y hombres procedentes de Guatemala\, El Salvador\, Honduras y México. El libro Ecos migrantes ha sido recientemente galardonado con la Medalla de Oro “Victor Villaseñor” del International Latino Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Interocepción insular: Lo patológico en la imaginación literaria del laboratorio Caribe
DESCRIPTION:Interocepción insular (UNC Press\, 2025) examines literary representations of disease and disability to reconceptualize the Hispanic Caribbean as a site of scientific\, economic\, and political experimentation. Exploring how individuals subjected to various forms of testing—eugenic\, medical\, neoliberal\, or otherwise—hyper-monitor a corporeality that is at once their own and alien. By theorizing the “Caribbean laboratory” as distinct from the concentration camp or the plantation\, Ugarte investigates how test subjects apprehend their own bodies within ongoing regimes of experimentation\, while discussing how disease and disability are imagined\, recounted\, and experienced inside and outside medical and colonial diagnoses. \nAna Ugarte (Ph.D.\, Duke U) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at UCLA. Both a scholar of Health Humanities\, with a focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Latin American fiction and cultural production\, as well as global Latinx studies. Ugarte’s work has appeared in journals including Cultural Dynamics\, Journal for the Study of Gender and Sexuality\, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos\, and Voces del Caribe.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Pablo Millalen Lepin es integrante del Lof Mañiuko\, un territorio basado en la región de La Araucanía\, sur de Chile. Es miembro de la Comunidad de Historia Mapuche\, un colectivo de investigadores sociales basado en Temuco. Actualmente es Postdoctoral Fellow en el American Indian Studies Center (AISC)\, UCLA. \nEsta presentación aborda el proceso de despojo territorial del Pueblo Mapuche durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Aunque hay varios estudios\, las experiencias localizadas de resistencias permanecen insuficientemente documentadas en la historiografía tradicional. La presentación examina este desfase al centrarse en estrategias de defensa desarrolladas por comunidades Mapuche frente a la ofensiva colonizadora del Estado chileno\, tomando como caso de estudio el área de Galvarino. Mediante el análisis de archivos\, historia oral y evidencia local\, se argumenta que las comunidades no fueron sujetos pasivos\, sino que desarrollaron estrategias adaptivas que permitieron la preservación de sus estructuras sociales y territoriales.
