SUMMARY:Manifesto for a Feminist Nationalism; National and Gender Oppression in the Catalan Countries: Júlia Ojeda Caba (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya)
DESCRIPTION:This talk is based on the Manifesto for a Feminist Nationalism that Dr. Ojeda published on March 8\, 2023\, along with the Matriotes collective in the Catalan Countries. The manifesto claimed for a new intersectional perspective for the Catalan case that combines “the national oppression with the structural violence that patriarchy and global capitalism exert against subaltern individuals.” Basing on experiences from elsewhere—from the African-American and Latin feminists\, to indigenists from Abya Yala and Chinese activists against sexual harassment—\, the authors highlight the “predatory” nature of the Spanish nationalism\, and propose intersectional feminism as an emancipatory tool. They also highlight the key role that the Catalan language plays in the nation’s dynamics as it is considered the base of the Catalan national identity. Dr. Ojeda will also present her upcoming book Màtria o Barbàrie. 30 visions del feminisme català (‘Matriarchy or Barbarianism. 30 views of the Catalan feminism’)\, which gathers contributions from all Catalan Countries.

DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese invites you to a talk by Professor Debbie Sharnak\, co-sponsored by the UCLA Latin American Institute and the Promise Institute\, as well as the departments of Sociology and History. This lecture will take place on February 27\, 2024 from 1:00 to 3:00pm in Haines Hall 279. \nDuring the country’s dictatorship from 1973 to 1985\, Uruguayans suffered under crushing repression\, which included the highest rate of political incarceration in the world. Professor Sharnak will give a talk on her book\, Of Light and Struggle\, which explores how activists\, transnational social movements\, and international policymakers collaborated and clashed in response to this era and during the country’s transition back to democratic rule. \nAt the heart of the book is an examination of how the language and politics of human rights shifted over time as a result of conflict and convergence between local\, national\, and global dynamics. Sharnak examines the utility and limits of human rights language used by international NGOs\, such as Amnesty International\, and foreign governments\, such as the Carter administration. The book explores tensions between their responses to the dictatorship’s violations and the grassroots struggle for socioeconomic rights as well as new social movements around issues of race\, gender\, religion\, and sexuality in Uruguay. In exploring the interplay between debates taking place in activists’ living rooms\, presidential administrations\, and international halls of power\, the book uncovers the messy and contingent process through which human rights became a powerful discourse for social change. By looking at this pivotal period in international history\, Of Light and Struggle suggests that discussions around the small country on the Río de la Plata had global implications for the possibilities and constraints of human rights well beyond Uruguay’s shores.

DESCRIPTION:The Mediterranean Seminar and UCLA’s CMRS Center for Early Global Studies present the Mediterranean Seminar Winter 2024 Workshop\,  “Intermediaries\, Middle Grounds\, Middle Sea” held on 9 & 10 February at UCLA. \nAs the theater of engagement and integration of communities originating on the shores or from the hinterlands of Africa\, Asia\, and Europe\, the Mediterranean region served as a dynamic center of interaction and exchange from Antiquity through early modernity. Even as it began to lose political and economic centrality\, it has remained a zone of engagement of diverse peoples and cultures into the Modern era. DESCRIPTION:Please join us in honoring the 2024 UCLA Spanish & Portuguese Distinguished Alumni Lecture Award recipient Dr. Roberto Cantú\, Professor Emeritus at California State University\, Los Angeles. \nThe 2024 Distinguished Alumni Lecture topic is “Alfredo Véa’s Gods Go Begging: The War Novel as a Work of Art”. Gods Go Begging consists of fourteen chapters arranged according to temporal and global displacements\, framed within the years 1996 (San Francisco\, California); 1967-1973 (Vietnam-Hong Kong); 1978 (Alexandria\, Louisiana); and back to 1996 (San Francisco). The novel traced as a circle\, thus as the World–opens with a crime in a San Francisco hill\, investigated by Chicano defense attorney Jesse Pasadoble\, followed by flashbacks to Vietnam\, and to vivid descriptions of a quintessential battle on a hill near the Laotian border. War trauma thus surges as the novel’s central theme\, with an extended subtext laced and blended according to a calendar of seasons (Winter\, Spring)\, and to ancient Greek myths and drama (Persephone\, Aristophanes). \nThe UCLA Spanish & Portuguese Department will host the Distinguished Alumni lecture on Wednesday\, February 7\, 2024 at 4:30 PM at the UCLA Faculty Club. DESCRIPTION:Fenomenal\, Rompeforma 1989-1996\, is a documentary about Rompeforma: Marató n de Baile\, Performance & Visuales\, the experimental Latinx dance and performance festival that took place in Puerto Rico from 1989-1996. Fenomenal\, Rompeforma 1989-1996 features dozens of performances and commentary by many current leaders of the field\, and some who have sadly passed. Fenomenal intends to inspire younger generations of Latinx artists and cultural activists by providing evidence of the rich creative and artistic contributions of Latinx to the American avant-garde. Fenomenal preserves\, and makes available the repertoire of a generation of Latinx experimental dance\, performance\, and curation often overlooked and/or forgotten by historians\, scholars\, and practitioners in the field\, to confront the elusive amnesia and appropriation by mainstream players\, with respect to the(unexpected) work of Latinx experimental dance and performance artists. \nThis event is sponsored by the UCLA Program on Caribbean Studies and World Arts & Cultures/Dance. DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese invites you to a presentation by Yásnaya Elena Aguilar Gil\, the 2023-2024 UC Regents Lecturer. \nYásnaya Elena Aguilar Gil is a linguist\, writer\, activist\, and public intellectual based in Ayutla Mixe (Oaxaca\, Mexico)\, whose work focuses on the study\, preservation\, and revitalization of Indigenous languages across Mesoamerica. Aguilar Gil contributes regularly to publications and blogs such as Gatopardo\, El País\, E’px and #Ayuuk\, and has recently published the compilation of essays Ää. Manifiestos sobre la diversidad lingüística (Almadía\, 2023). \nIn her talk\, she will address the root causes for the current loss of linguistic diversity worldwide and will study some of its most poignant social and cultural consequences. DESCRIPTION:Miguel Ángel Oxlaj Cúmez is a Maya-Kaqchikel poet\, writer\, and scholar. He is the author of the novella Ru taqikil ri Sarima’ / La misión del Sarima’\, a short story compilation (Mitad mujer/Nik’aj Ixöq) and a poetry collection (Xti Saqirisan Na Pe/Planicie de olvido). He has been awarded with the B’atz’ Price for Indigenous Literatures (Guatemala\, 2009) and with the Poet of the Year Award by The Americas Poetry Festival of New York (2023). DESCRIPTION:As part of the series “El Mar y sus Metáforas”\, Prof. Jimena Rodriguez invites guest speaker Prof. Elizabeth Davis (The Ohio State University) to speak on “The Castaway’s Bond: Shipwreck and Survival from Renaissance Poetry to the Fourth Genre” event held on October 23rd\, 2023\, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in Rolfe Hall 4302 (Lydeen Library). \nElizabeth Davis specializes in literature and culture of early modern Spain. Her current book project\, tentatively titled The Seafarer’s Bond: Risk\, Transaction and Textual Circulation in the Spanish Atlantic World (1544-1660)\, examines the cultural implications of written transactions (private letters and ones from Armada officers\, shipwreck accounts\, etc.) on the open seas that textually rephrase Spanish culture across the Iberian Atlantic. Professor Davis served as President of the Society for Renaissance and Baroque Hispanic Poetry during 2014-2017 and as Member and Chair of the Executive Committee for the Division on Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Spanish Prose and Poetry of the Modern Language Association of America (2006-2010).

DESCRIPTION:The Mexican poet\, essayist\, editor\, translator\, and critic Adolfo Castañón will be joining a Spanish & Portuguese graduate seminar taught by Maarten van Delden as a guest speaker. The session will take place via ZOOM on Tuesday\, October 10\, from 3:00 – 5:50 pm PST (4:00 – 6:50 pm Mexico City time) with a 15-minute break scheduled at 4:15 pm PST (5:15 pm Mexico City time). \nProf. van Delden will be opening the class to members of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA and others who would like to attend. He is the author and editor of dozens of books and collections and is especially well known for his numerous studies of the works of Alfonso Reyes and Octavio Paz\, with whom he collaborated on many projects. His publications on Paz include Tránsito de Octavio Paz (Poemas\, apuntes\, ensayos) (México: El Colegio de México\, 2014)\, Trinidad profana: Octavio Paz\, Efraín Huerta\, José Revueltas (México: Ediciones Sin Nombre\, 2016)\, and\, as editor\, Cartas cruzadas: Octavio Paz\, Arnaldo Orfila (México: Siglo XXI\, 2005). Adolfo Castañón served for many years as the Editor in Chief of Mexico’s premier publishing house\, Fondo de Cultura Económica.

DESCRIPTION:El juez Miguel Ángel Gálvez ha sido parte fundamental de los esfuerzos relacionados con la justicia transicional en Guatemala. Algunos de los casos más destacados en los que ha participado incluyen el juicio por genocidio contra Efraín Ríos Montt (2013)\, el juicio por corrupción contra el expresidente Otto Pérez Molina (2015)\, así como el caso del “Diario Militar”. Ha sido recientemente galardonado por Northwestern Law con el Global Jurist of the Year Award (2023) por sus contribuciones a la lucha contra la corrupción y en defensa de los derechos humanos en Guatemala. SUMMARY:The syntax of what’s left unsaid: A view of ellipsis from Mayan and Spanish by Rodrigo Ranero
DESCRIPTION:Ellipsis is structure and meaning without form. In spoken languages\, it is silence whose meaning must be recovered from a linguistic antecedent in the discourse. This talk proposes a new perspective on ellipsis based on a novel investigation of Spanish and Kaqchikel\, a Mayan language of Guatemala. The unresolved question regarding ellipsis that I address concerns the precise nature of the relationship that must hold between the silence and its antecedent—what has come to be known as the identity condition underpinning ellipsis. Based on my cross-linguistic approach\, I argue for a new understanding of the identity condition\, proposing that syntax is a crucial component\, but strict identity is not required (contra a long tradition). The crucial data that support my analysis involve the tense system of Spanish and the rich voices of Kaqchikel (which go beyond the familiar active and passive voices).
