DESCRIPTION:Miguel Ángel Oxlaj Cúmez is a Maya-Kaqchikel poet\, writer\, and scholar. He is the author of the novella Ru taqikil ri Sarima’ / La misión del Sarima’\, a short story compilation (Mitad mujer/Nik’aj Ixöq) and a poetry collection (Xti Saqirisan Na Pe/Planicie de olvido). He has been awarded with the B’atz’ Price for Indigenous Literatures (Guatemala\, 2009) and with the Poet of the Year Award by The Americas Poetry Festival of New York (2023). DESCRIPTION:As part of the series “El Mar y sus Metáforas”\, Prof. Jimena Rodriguez invites guest speaker Prof. Elizabeth Davis (The Ohio State University) to speak on “The Castaway’s Bond: Shipwreck and Survival from Renaissance Poetry to the Fourth Genre” event held on October 23rd\, 2023\, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in Rolfe Hall 4302 (Lydeen Library). \nElizabeth Davis specializes in literature and culture of early modern Spain. Her current book project\, tentatively titled The Seafarer’s Bond: Risk\, Transaction and Textual Circulation in the Spanish Atlantic World (1544-1660)\, examines the cultural implications of written transactions (private letters and ones from Armada officers\, shipwreck accounts\, etc.) on the open seas that textually rephrase Spanish culture across the Iberian Atlantic. Professor Davis served as President of the Society for Renaissance and Baroque Hispanic Poetry during 2014-2017 and as Member and Chair of the Executive Committee for the Division on Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Spanish Prose and Poetry of the Modern Language Association of America (2006-2010).

DESCRIPTION:The Mexican poet\, essayist\, editor\, translator\, and critic Adolfo Castañón will be joining a Spanish & Portuguese graduate seminar taught by Maarten van Delden as a guest speaker. The session will take place via ZOOM on Tuesday\, October 10\, from 3:00 – 5:50 pm PST (4:00 – 6:50 pm Mexico City time) with a 15-minute break scheduled at 4:15 pm PST (5:15 pm Mexico City time). \nProf. van Delden will be opening the class to members of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA and others who would like to attend. Please email him at mvandelden@humnet.ucla.edu if you are interested and he will provide you with the ZOOM link as well as two readings the guest speaker has asked students to read before the class. The readings are the following poems by Paz: “Nocturno de San Ildefonso” and Pasado en claro. \nPlease feel free to attend the first half of the class or stay for the entire session\, which will be conducted in Spanish.    \nAdolfo Castañón is a member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua and the 2020 recipient of the Premio Nacional de Artes y Literatura\, among other awards. He is the author and editor of dozens of books and collections and is especially well known for his numerous studies of the works of Alfonso Reyes and Octavio Paz\, with whom he collaborated on many projects. His publications on Paz include Tránsito de Octavio Paz (Poemas\, apuntes\, ensayos) (México: El Colegio de México\, 2014)\, Trinidad profana: Octavio Paz\, Efraín Huerta\, José Revueltas (México: Ediciones Sin Nombre\, 2016)\, and\, as editor\, Cartas cruzadas: Octavio Paz\, Arnaldo Orfila (México: Siglo XXI\, 2005). Adolfo Castañón served for many years as the Editor in Chief of Mexico’s premier publishing house\, Fondo de Cultura Económica.

DESCRIPTION:El juez Miguel Ángel Gálvez ha sido parte fundamental de los esfuerzos relacionados con la justicia transicional en Guatemala. Algunos de los casos más destacados en los que ha participado incluyen el juicio por genocidio contra Efraín Ríos Montt (2013)\, el juicio por corrupción contra el expresidente Otto Pérez Molina (2015)\, así como el caso del “Diario Militar”. Ha sido recientemente galardonado por Northwestern Law con el Global Jurist of the Year Award (2023) por sus contribuciones a la lucha contra la corrupción y en defensa de los derechos humanos en Guatemala. El juez Gálvez\, quien se encuentra actualmente perseguido en su país\, abordará ―entre otros temas― la involución sufrida por la democracia y el estado de derecho desde la expulsión de la Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala en 2019.

SUMMARY:The syntax of what’s left unsaid: A view of ellipsis from Mayan and Spanish by Rodrigo Ranero
DESCRIPTION:Ellipsis is structure and meaning without form. In spoken languages\, it is silence whose meaning must be recovered from a linguistic antecedent in the discourse. This talk proposes a new perspective on ellipsis based on a novel investigation of Spanish and Kaqchikel\, a Mayan language of Guatemala. The unresolved question regarding ellipsis that I address concerns the precise nature of the relationship that must hold between the silence and its antecedent—what has come to be known as the identity condition underpinning ellipsis. Based on my cross-linguistic approach\, I argue for a new understanding of the identity condition\, proposing that syntax is a crucial component\, but strict identity is not required (contra a long tradition). The crucial data that support my analysis involve the tense system of Spanish and the rich voices of Kaqchikel (which go beyond the familiar active and passive voices). DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese invites you to Gabriela Mistral: Reimagining Chile in Times of Feminism\, Uprising\, and the Creation of National Community presented by guest speaker Professor Soledad Falabella Luco\, Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades\, Universidad de Chile  \nDate: Wednesday\, February 1\, 2023 \nTime: 4:00 pm \nLocation: Lydeen Library\, 4302 Rolfe Hall \nFeminist movements have been at the center of recent mass uprisings against social injustice in Chile that have launched a national process for re-writing the Chilean Constitution and imagining more inclusive and egalitarian communities. The figure of Chilean poet and Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) has become emblematic of this contemporary transformation. Mistral’s image and words have mediated the new voices\, bodies\, demands\, and dreams articulated from the streets and in elected assemblies. Professor Soledad Falabella provides a genealogy of Gabriela Mistral’s legacy in Chilean cultural politics. She traces how a new generation of activists have taken Mistral’s image out of the conservative closet\, where it was once appropriated by the military dictatorship\, and rearticulated the poet’s symbolic power as challenges to patriarchy\, racism\, and colonialism.

DESCRIPTION:This two-day conference focuses on the many cross-influences among Romance literatures and cultures from the Middle Ages through more recent times\, with special attention to the topic of translation. More than 25 international scholars will examine different aspects of the circulation of vernacular works via translations from one Romance language to another\, from the 13th to the 18th century\, in Europe and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Speculative Fictions from Latin America’s Past\, Present\, and Futures\nOct. 14-15\, 2022\nLuskin Conference Center – Illumination Room\n  \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nTo attend in person\, no advance registration is required. \nTo attend virtually\, you must register at the following link located HERE. \nThis symposium aims to take stock of Latin America’s speculative fiction production—understood broadly as an umbrella term that includes a variety of genres\, such as science fiction\, horror\, fantasy\, and their subgenres and derivatives. “Surviving the Anthropocene” will address this early literary production in the 20th century until the cyberpunk boom of the 1990s but\, most importantly\, will put the focus on the past decade\, when both the writing and the scholarly study of Latin American speculative fictions have exploded. This cultural phenomenon has coincided with the emergence of a variety of discourses around the “Anthropocene” —a concept alluding to the current geological epoch in which the human has become a dominant force on the environment— that have attempted to make sense of the accelerated global ecological changes. \nOverarching framing questions include: What works\, tendencies\, preoccupations\, and thematic axes comprise and characterize “speculative fiction” in/from Latin America during the era of the Anthropocene? What are the contours of the local contexts—political\, economic\, social\, and cultural—that inform and inspire the works produced? López \nMarissa López is Associate Graduate Dean and Professor of English and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA\, researching Chicanx literature from the 19th century to the present with an emphasis on 19th century Mexican California. She has written two books: Chicano Nations (NYU 2011) is about nationalism and Chicanx literature from the early-1800s to post-9/11; Racial Immanence (NYU 2019) explores uses of the body and affect in Chicanx cultural production.  She recently completed a year-long residency at the Los Angeles Public Library as a Scholars & Society fellow with the American Council of Learned Societies where she worked to collaboratively develop a mobile app\, “Picturing Mexican America\,” that uses geodata to display images of Mexican California relevant to a user’s location. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nROUNDTABLE: “Overlooked Countries / Regions – Central America\, the Caribbean beyond Cuba\, Paraguay”\n\nDavid Díaz Ares \n\nDavid Díaz Arias es Ph.D. en Historia por Indiana University Bloomington (Estados Unidos). Es profesor catedrático y director del Centro de Investigaciones Históricas de América Central de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Ha ganado el Premio Nacional Luis Ferrero a la Investigación Cultural (2015) concedido por el Ministerio de Cultura de Costa Rica y el Premio Cleto González Víquez conferido por la Academia de Geografía e Historia de Costa Rica. Ha publicado decenas de trabajos sobre historia política\, historia de la memoria\, ritos y rituales estatales\, naciones y nacionalismos\, guerra civil\, instituciones\, caudillos\, procesos de paz\, construcción del Estado\, literatura\, ciencia ficción y otra diversidad de temas en la historia de Centroamérica en general y Costa Rica en particular. Sus últimos son: La independencia de Costa Rica. Historia\, debate y conmemoración\, 1821-2021 (San José\, Editorial de la Universidad Estatal a Distancia\, 2021) y Chicago Boys del Trópico: historia del neoliberalismo en Costa Rica (1965-2000) (San José\, Costa Rica\, Editorial de la Universidad de Costa Rica\, 2021). Díaz Arias también es escritor de ciencia ficción. \nMiguel González Abellás \n\nMiguel González Abellás was born in Ourense\, Spain. He graduated from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1990 and continued his studies in Latin American literature at the University of Kansas\, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1997. He has been teaching since then at Washburn University\, in Kansas\, where he teaches Spanish language and Latin American literature and culture. Besides\, he currently chairs the Department of Modern Languages at that university. He has previously published Jugando con estereotipos (Madrid: Pliegos\, 2003) and Visiones de exilio: Para leer a Zoé Valdes (Lanham\, Maryland: University Press of America\, 2008)\, as well as several articles in Alba de América\, Caribe\, Hispania and Hispanic Journal. \n  \n  \n  \nEmily Maguire \nEmily A. Maguire is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University\, where she specializes in literature of the Hispanic Caribbean and its diasporas. She is the author of Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography (University Press of Florida\, 2011; 2nd edition\, 2018)\, and the co-editor (with Antonio Córdoba) of Posthumanism in Latin(x) American Science Fiction (forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan). Her articles have appeared in Revista de Estudios Hispánicos\, Small Axe\, A Contracorriente\, ASAP/Journal\, and Revista Iberoamericana\, among other places. She is currently finishing a second book project on the temporality of Caribbean science fiction. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nKEYNOTE ADDRESS\n\nElizabeth Ginway \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nElizabeth (Libby) Ginway is Professor of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida\, where she teaches courses on Portuguese language\, Brazilian literature and culture and Latin American science fiction. She is author of Cyborgs\, Sexuality\, and the Undead: The Body in Mexican and Brazilian Speculative Fiction (Vanderbilt UP 2020) and Brazilian Science Fiction: Cultural Myths and Nationhood in the Land of the Future (Bucknell UP\, 2004\, Devir\, 2005)\, to be re-published in Brazil in 2023 by Bandeirola. She is co-editor of Latin American Science Fiction: Theory and Practice (Palgrave\, 2012) with J. Andrew Brown as well as a special number of the journal Alambique: Homenaje a Mary Shelley (2020) with Giovanna Rivero. \nShe has over 50 publications\, including articles\, chapters and reviews on Brazilian and Latin American literature published in both the U.S. and Brazil\, in journals such as Alambique\, Extrapolation\, Femspec\, Hispania\, Luso-Brazilian Review\, Modern Language Studies\, Montage AV\, Papéis\, Semina\, Revista Iberoamericana\, Science Fiction Studies\, and Zanzalá. She is the current International Division Head for the International Association of the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA) and serves on the editorial boards of the journals Science Fiction Studies\, Extrapolation\, Alambique\, and the Peter Lang Series on World Science Fiction.
