Policy on Language Examinations

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides the following language evaluations:

• • Placement Exams are available on Bruin Learn for placement in the following courses:
    • • Spanish 1-3
      • Spanish 7A, 7B, 27
      • Portuguese 1-3, 11A/11B
      • The placement exam will provide an immediate recommendation for course placement and is not intended for any other purpose.

• • Exemption Exams in Spanish and Portuguese are available on Bruin Learn for students challenging the College language requirement (Level 3). The Exemption Exams are administered once per quarter and students who pass will fulfill their College language requirement. No credit is awarded.

• • For placement or Exemption in any other language taught in the Department (Basque, Catalan, Nahuatl, Quechua) please contact the instructor directly.

• • The Department cannot provide language evaluations for any other purposes. This includes but is not limited to:
    • • FLAS language evaluations
      • Fulbright language evaluations
        (For FLAS and Fulbright language evaluations, we suggest reaching out to faculty from whom you have taken previous coursework.)
      • Graduate program language requirements
      • Language requirement for admission to a program or university
      • Language requirements for majors or programs that differ from the College language requirement.
