Courses

Spanish 1-3

Spanish 160. 21st-Century Spanish

This course explores the Spanish language in the 21st century as a global, dynamic, and constantly evolving phenomenon. It analyzes Spanish as an international language, its relationship with English, and the impact of globalization and digital communication, as well as the creation of neologisms, inclusive language debates, linguistic myths, and contemporary popular culture. Students examine how social movements, migration, technology, urban music, and social media reshape vocabulary and identity. Through linguistic analysis, class discussions, and presentations, students critically engage with current debates about language change, normativity, and cultural expression in the Spanish-speaking world.

This class covers 8 topics: 1. Spanish as an International Language; 2. Spanish and English in Contact; 3. “Atypical” Spellings in 21st Century Spanish; 4. Neologisms, Social Change, and Word Formation; 5. Spanish in Social Media; 6. Feminism and Inclusive Language; 7. Myths and “Errors” in Spanish; 8. Spanish Varieties in Popular Culture.
