GOAL Program Mentorship

GRADUATE OUTREACH ADVISING LINK (GOAL)

Graduate Outreach Advising Link (GOAL) is a resource for undergraduate students pursuing majors and minors in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. GOAL is intended to offer motivation and support for undergraduates as they complete their BAs, including assistance in applying for scholarships and fellowships, seeking research opportunities, and preparing for graduate and professional degree programs. Mentorship participants will be paired with a graduate student mentor from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese who will offer one-on-one support. In light of the online transition, GOAL will also be hosting social events to help create community and a space to get to know each other outside of the classroom.

Coordinator: Angélica Waner is a first-generation college student and graduate student born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. She is passionate about higher education accessibility and hopes to continue GOAL as a resource for underrepresented students at UCLA. In her spare time, she likes to go on walks with her dogs, watch and listen to anything true crime, and go out to eat with friends.

Mentor: Eduardo Díaz is a first-gen 4th-year doctoral student who works on 20th Century Mexican Literature and rural narratives. Because he grew up in a low-income family of farm workers in Central California, Eduardo focuses his mentorship on uplifting and guiding his mentees through inequitable and difficult to navigate spaces. He is thrilled about working with GOAL and feels passionate about social justice, environmental rights, and creating safe and inclusive spaces for all. In his free time, he likes to write queer poetry, play video games, explore LA, and help around his family’s goat ranch when possible.

Mentor: Julia Calderón is a 4th-year doctoral candidate who works on Central American literature. She was born and raised in Spain and completed her BA and MA there before migrating to the US, where she is still learning to navigate American academia and society (as well as English language!). She is thrilled to be working as a mentor with GOAL and feels passionate about social justice, human rights, and creating campuses that are more inclusive. In her free time, she likes reading, watching movies, exploring the city, and going out to eat.
