Javier Patiño promoted to Associate Professor

The Department is delighted to share the news that our colleague Professor Javier Patiño was approved for promotion to Associate Professor with tenure, effective 07/01/2024. Professor Patiño joined the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA in 2017, after receiving his PhD from Princeton University. He is a specialist in Spanish and Italian culture and the history of science, with a focus on the Early Modern period. His first book, The Age of Subtlety: Nature and Rhetorical Conceits in Early Modern Europe, was published earlier this year by the University of Delaware Press. He is currently working on his next book, Ecologies of Decay: Spontaneous Generation and Nature’s Economy. Professor Patiño is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including an ACLS fellowship in 2020-2021 and a Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fellow at I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, in Florence, Italy, in 2024-2025.
