Congratulations to our graduate student, Jesus Duarte, on receiving three awards for his research: the Graduate Research Mentorship (GRM) Award (UCLA Graduate Programs), the Richard and Gerrie Leeds International Graduate Travel Fellowship (UCLA Division of Humanities), and the Graduate and Predoctoral Fellowship in Ethnic Studies (UCLA Institute of American Cultures).
Jesus’ research project, titled “Sexuality and Language: A Sociophonetic Analysis of Queer Speech in Mexico and the United States,” analyzes in what ways queer and heterosexual speech differs from each other and whether such differences are language-specific.
