Assignments of Language Courses during the Summer Session

Summer teaching positions are limited. Whereas the Department strives to employ as many TAs as possible during the Summer Sessions, it cannot guarantee that all graduate students will be employed.

TAs who teach during the summer enjoy a high degree of independence and, thus, need to be ready to teach autonomously. Special consideration is given, therefore, to graduate students with at least two years of instructional experience and with an excellent teaching record.

Most graduate students teaching language courses during the summer will be assigned to Spanish 1-3, as only a few sections of SPAN 4-5, SPAN 7A/7B, SPAN 10, SPAN 25/27, and PORT 13 are offered in the Summer Sessions.

The Undergraduate Affairs Committee of the Department will consider the following general criteria when assigning summer positions: i) Breadth of teaching experience: Instructors who have taught all the levels of first- and second-year language are preferred; ii) Teaching record: Instructors with a strong teaching record as evidenced by student evaluations,

DLP observations, and teaching awards are preferred; iii) Opportunity: All things being equal, priority will be given to students who have not previously taught in the summer.

Selection criteria for SPAN 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5: i) Most TAs who are not selected to teach SPAN 7A/7B, SPAN 10, SPAN 25/27, SPAN/PORT M35, SPAN 42, SPAN 44, or PORT 13 will be assigned a level of SPAN 1, 2, or 3; ii) A limited number of TAs who are not selected to teach SPAN 7A/7B, SPAN 10, SPAN 25/27, SPAN/PORT M35, SPAN 42, SPAN 44, or PORT 13 may be assigned a level of SPAN 4-5 (subject to Summer class offerings).

Selection criteria for SPAN 7A and 7B: i) TAs who have previously taught SPAN 7A/7B or SPAN 10 during the summer are not eligible to teach SPAN 7A/7B in the Summer Session; ii) At least two years of teaching experience; iii) Must have taught SPAN 1, 2, or 3 within the last two years; iv) Must have previously taught SPAN 7A/7B during the Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters; v) Must have completed a workshop on heritage language pedagogy offered regularly by the Department; vi) Appointments will be awarded on a competitive basis, considering the following elements: 1) Previous teaching student evaluations; 2) DLP class observations; and 3) Experience with external pedagogical training (i.e. CUTF, EPIC, etc.) and/or other ongoing professionalization training (workshops, seminars, etc.).

Selection criteria for SPAN 10: i) TAs who have taught SPAN 10 or SPAN 7A/7B during a previous summer are not eligible to teach the course again in the Summer Session; ii) When only one section of SPAN 10 is offered, priority will be given to students who have not previously taught said course during the academic year. (*For rookie TAs, attendance to a SPAN 10 Workshop offered during Spring quarter is mandatory); iii) At least two years of teaching experience; iv) Must have taught SPAN 1, 2, or 3 within the last two years; v) Appointments will be awarded on a competitive basis, considering the following elements: 1) Previous teaching student evaluations; 2) DLP class observations; and 3) Experience with external pedagogical training (i.e. CUTF, EPIC, etc.) and/or other ongoing professionalization training (workshops, seminars, etc.).

Selection criteria for SPAN 25 and SPAN 27: i) Must have previously taught SPAN 25/27 during the Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters; ii) Appointments will be awarded on a competitive basis, considering the following elements: 1) Previous teaching student evaluations; 2) DLP class observations; and 3) Experience with external pedagogical training (i.e. CUTF, EPIC, etc.) and/or other ongoing professionalization training (workshops, seminars, etc.).

Selection criteria for PORT 13: i) This course may or may not be offered during a given summer (subject to enrollment); ii) When offered, preference will be given to students in the Portuguese Program who do not qualify to teach Spanish language courses.
