How to Add a Minor
How to Substitute a Course for Major/Minor Credit
Alternate course substitutions are approved on a case-by-case basis and must be clearly related to the major/minor. Decisions can take up to 2 weeks and will be communicated through email.
Maximum Substitutions for Majors: A maximum of 2 (two) course substitutions from an outside department/institution are allowed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Undergraduate Advisor, where the focus of study of such courses must be the Spanish-speaking world
Maximum Substitutions for Minors: A maximum of 1 (one) course substitution from an outside department/institution is allowed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Undergraduate Advisor, where the focus of study of such courses must be the Spanish-speaking world.
You will need to submit the course syllabus for review and complete the Course Substitution Petition form here.
How to Get Major/Minor Credit for a Study Abroad Course
The Department’s guidelines for approving study abroad courses towards major/minor requirements are as follows:
- Language of instruction and assignments must be in Spanish.
- Topic must be clearly relevant and/or comparable to the themes offered by courses in the department.
- Cannot repeat any course previously taken.
- Class must be taken for a letter grade, no P/NP allowed.
- If counting towards an upper-division course, course must transfer as upper division.
Note: Only the Office of Admission and Registrar’s Office at UCLA have the authority to determine whether a UCEAP or non-UC study abroad program course will: 1) receive credit and 2) transfer as upper or lower division. Once courses are processed, they will post the credit earned on the student’s Degree Audit Report.
It is important to understand that they will only review official transcripts of coursework upon a student’s completion of the program. There is no “pre-approval” process that guarantees that a student will receive specific credit for a course (especially true for non-UC study abroad program courses).
Maximum Substitutions for Majors: A maximum of 2 (two) course substitutions from an outside department/institution are allowed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Undergraduate Advisor, where the focus of study of such courses must be the Spanish-speaking world.
Maximum Substitutions for Minors: A maximum of 1 (one) course substitution from an outside department/institution is allowed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Undergraduate Advisor, where the focus of study of such courses must be the Spanish-speaking world.

PTE Policy
See below for answers to common PTE Policy questions.
For Spanish and Portuguese Language Courses
If the Spanish or Portuguese language class you wish to add is full, place yourself on the waitlist for the class. You will move up in the order you have added your name to the wait list as students adjust their schedules and seats become available.
The only way to enroll in a full language class is via the waitlist. We will not assign PTEs for any full Spanish or Portuguese language class and we will not exceed the enrollment caps. For more information, please click here.
For Non-Language and Upper Division Courses
If the non-language or upper division class you wish to add is full, place yourself on the waitlist for the class, then contact the instructor directly to inquire about the possibility of being added.
If the instructor approves your request, they will provide you with a PTE number. It is up to the instructor on a case-by-case basis whether to over-enroll a class.
