Research

I’m interested in the aesthetic mechanisms underlying violent sociopolitical landscapes — authoritarian regimes, revolutionary moments, forced migration, armed conflict. What draws me to this work is the chance to understand how reality operates on a symbolic, abstract level, and to trace the connections between different artistic languages and the broader realities in which they exist.

In particular, I focus on contemporary Central American and Caribbean cultural production, working across documentary film, performance, poetry, and long- and short-form literary narrative. The question I’m ultimately trying to answer is: what are the aesthetic foundations of social reality? I focus on violent contexts because I believe they offer a privileged vantage point onto these mechanisms, since so much tends to become more visible under such conditions.

My master’s thesis at UBC examines what I call the “aesthetic debts” of contemporary Nicaraguan cultural production toward the Sandinista revolution. Through close readings of works by documentary filmmaker Mercedes Moncada Rodríguez, queer performer Elyla, and poet Francisco Ruiz Udiel — all born between 1972 and 1988, and so having lived their childhood or adolescence under Sandinista rule — I explore how different artistic languages negotiate this complex legacy, and what the aesthetic results of those negotiations might tell us about the broader relationship between art and political memory in Nicaragua.
