A community-centered approach to supporting dual language learning.

This collaboration between the Children’s Institute (CII) and UCLA researchers addresses systemic inequities faced by Spanish-speaking children in Los Angeles by closing research and service gaps in bilingual language development. Despite representing the majority of dual language learners in LA, Spanish-speaking families remain underserved due to geographic, socioeconomic, and institutional barriers. By embedding UCLA researchers within CII’s trusted spaces, this initiative will expand access to bilingual education resources, enhance educator training, and generate research to inform clinicians and policymakers. The partnership aims to empower parents with evidence-based strategies to support dual language learning and nurture a pipeline of bilingual, first-generation UCLA students as future researchers and educators. Over time, it will help reduce the achievement gap for bilingual learners and foster more inclusive, effective early childhood education across Los Angeles.
